Ajay, The Ugly…

Ajay,

Today is our last installment in our three-part email series called "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly." Web design projects come in all shapes and sizes. Today I want to share the details of a project that was just plain ugly. Here's how it went down.

The Ugly Project:

This was my very first client. Just 4 days after launching my business, they hired me to make some changes to their logo. Instead of asking for my advice about improvements we could make, the client had very specific changes they wanted. Essentially I was just a pixel pusher. He told me exactly what to do and I did it.

Unfortunately, this happens quite a bit in our industry. The client is a control freak with a vision. They have a wild imagination and want you to somehow translate this vision into an award winning logo or website design. The problem is, they want their fingerprints on every little piece of the project.

Generally, this ends in disaster.

The project is literally and figuratively ugly. The client is a pain to work with. And you end up with a "Frankenlogo" that you would never put in your portfolio.

There is a kind of silver-lining with some of these projects though. They often pay really well. Also, if the client is not completely crazy, you can educate them about the design process and turn these ugly projects into good projects. The key is to establish expectations up-front.

As I have mentioned before, working with clients can be tricky. Your goal should be to filter out as many of the bad or ugly projects BEFORE you even write a proposal. As you gain more experience and have a large sales pipeline, you can select only the best clients and projects.

For example, I just landed a project where I should make between $100 to $150 per hour.

We will be discussing this and other hot topics on our coaching call this week. If you would like to find out more, you can check out the details here:
