Ajay, Lesson #2 - Begin With the End in Mind

Ajay,

Did you see this email? We sent is late last week, but had deliverability issues with our email service. In case you missed it, here you go:

Yesterday we talked about the importance of staying focused. Another lesson I learned this past month was to begin with the end in mind. I found myself chasing down too many projects and prospects that were good short-term money. When you are just getting started that's easy to do. And it is somewhat necessary.

I have to pay the bills.

So, I do need to keep the cash-flow coming in. So, the logical next step is to go after any and every project. After all, you don't want to miss an opportunity.

Bad idea.

One of the saddest business stories I have heard, came from one of my past students. He had been in business for 10 years and desperately needed help. His business was struggling. Over the course of 10 years, he had built over 1,000 websites.

1,000 websites in 10 years!

You would think he was wildly successful. But here was the problem. His business model was to simply build websites. What I call a "one and done" web design company. You build a website, collect a check and move on to the next project.

He never followed up with clients. He did not provide any additional services or products other than some very basic hosting. And his retention rate was horrible. And out of 1,000 projects he did not have a single case study or client success story.

He was in big trouble.

He was struggling to get leads and couldn't close deals like he used to. If he had simply "started with the end in mind," everything would have been different. He would have been able to retain at least 10% of those customers and put them on a recurring service plan at an average of $200 - $500 per month.

Just remember, your goal as a web designer is not to simply trade your time for money cranking out website after website. It is to help business owners increase their income through an online presence (website, marketing etc.). When you help business owners reach their income goals, you have a lifelong customer. Plus you get more referrals. And you have a series of success stories/case studies to share making it much easier to land new clients.
