Ajay, Are you a parasite?

Ajay,

Are you a parasite? I know that sounds strange, but follow me on this. In business there is something called the Host-Parasite Relationship. Here is an example. Starbucks is the host to a number of "parasites."

When you go into a Starbucks they sell coffee and tea and pastries. These are products they own. But in addition to these core products they sell other food and coffee accessories that are from other brands. So the bag of gourmet Moon Cheese you buy is from a "parasite" company.

This relationship benefits both companies. Starbucks is able to increase sales and profits by offering more products. Moon Cheese increases their sales and profits as well by expanding their market into all 21,366 Starbucks stores.

So what does all this have to do with your web design business? Well, one of the fastest ways to grow your business is to become a parasite. If you can find a host or several hosts, you can add a steady stream of leads for your business.

Let me show you how I just landed my first host.

Last week I landed a new client. They had a website that went down and needed someone to step in to save the day. I thought it would be a quick fix, but turned into a huge mess. Throughout the whole process I kept calm and bent over backwards to help the client out.

In the process, I had to speak with their previous web design/hosting company. After several interactions with the owner of this business it became clear that we had a mutual respect for one another and that there was a potential to work together.

Here's why this host-parasite relationship works. They primarily work on large projects with custom database development. I primarily work with smaller local businesses that want a basic website. There is no conflict of interest.

The owner said that he gets 2-3 calls per month for projects he does not want, because they do not fit his target market. As long as I can deliver a quality service, he will be happy to refer these to me.

So, are you ready to become a parasite?

We will be discussing this on our coaching call this week. If you would like to find out more, you can check out the details here:
