Ajay, Day 9, Never Give Up

Ajay,

How many times should you followup with a prospect?

2?

4?

7?

Studies say you should followup at least 7 times. That may seem like a lot but let's face the facts. We are all very busy and very distracted. There are only a few things that we have to buy… food, clothing, shelter etc.

And for business owners there are only a few things they have to buy… equipment, materials, staff (labor), insurance etc. Other products and services, like a website, are viewed as "non-essentials."

(By the way, I don't agree with this necessarily. I am just telling you the way most business owners think.)

So, we need to get a business owner to view a website as an "essential" or at the very least, a key part of their business growth. How do we do this? Well it takes time and persistence and proof.

In my experience, the sales cycle for a small business website takes 60 days on average. So, that's 60 days from the time they ask for a quote until they make a purchasing decision. Over the course those 60 days you need to have anywhere from 10-20 interactions with the prospect.

This will be a mixture of emails, phone calls, text messages, direct mail, and meetings. The more variety in medium the better.

So, what do you do with those leads that go cold? Add them to a long-term email nurturing list. You simply reduce the frequency of your followup, but continue to build your relationship.

What do you send them? Valuable information that will help them as a business owner. And success stories from projects that you are working on. Trust me, if a prospect receives an email from you every couple of weeks with proof of how you can help them grow their business, they will contact you.

I call it my "Chinese Water Torture of Proof."
