Would You Enrol Your Child in a LEGO School? Posted: 27 May 2013 12:50 AM PDT Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen is the billionaire grandson of the founder of LEGO. He was born in the Danish town of Billund — a rural municipality in Jutland that Copenhagen residents refer to as "hicksville" — and has made it his mission, given his means, to turn the area into the "Capital of Children." In addition to sponsoring an airport, several community centers, a church, a theater and a library in Billund, Kirk Kristiansen is also developing more kid-friendly fare: a parkour area. And an interactive park called the Dance Arch. And a playground filled with rubberized toys known as bObles. Oh, and Read more... More about Children, School, Legos, Us World, and World |
Motion-Activated Bike-Wheel LEDs Light up as Graphics Posted: 26 May 2013 11:26 PM PDT A Northern California company is taking bike lights to a new level by developing LEDs that light up wheels with custom images and animations. MonkeyLectric's Monkey Light Pro system for bicycle wheels creates a LED light show when the bike is moving. Monkey Light Pro is a set of four rows of LED light strips, which are waterproof for riding in the elements. Using companion web-based software, you can program images and animations that can be sent to the light system via Bluetooth. When travelling at speeds of 10 to 40 MPH, the Monkey Light Pro LEDs light up when installed on your bicycle's existing wheels. Because of a phenomenon known as the "persistence of vision," humans see and process those flashing lights into a recognizable image. It's quite a sight to see in action; check it out in the video, above Read more... More about Bike, Bicycle, Cycling, Biking, and Kickstarter |

Man Transforms Plane Into Street-Legal Race Car Posted: 26 May 2013 07:27 PM PDT What do you do when you have an abandoned airplane and a van? If you’re Officer Jeff Bloch, you get some buddies together and weld them into the a plane that’s also a car, and call it "The Spirit of LeMons." I’m not saying that this street-legal plane/car isn’t cool to look at it, but a car that flies is cooler than a plane that drives. That should be your next project, Officer Bloch. The Spirit of LeMons was first built to participate in a race called 24 Hours of LeMons. It’s an endurance race for crappy cars, and sometimes people enter things like cars that are also planes. Bloch and his plane/car won the prize for the car that, as Bloch put it, “has no business being on the race track, and yet is really cool and comes out there and does its very best anyway.” Read more... When One Social Network Is Enough Posted: 26 May 2013 03:56 PM PDT If someone asked you how many social networks you actively use, how many would you list? To start, you need Facebook to share your personal updates, Twitter to share the latest news, Google+ for Hangouts, Pinterest for recipes, Instagram for your photos, Foursquare to share your location-based tips, LinkedIn for professional updates, Tumblr for cat GIFs and, before you know it, you're reflecting on how you find time to use all of them. In a post on Quora, a user wrote, "I have noticed in myself … that becoming continuously and actively involved in a new social network often leads soon to the cessation of involvement in another one." A user in the thread replied, "It's difficult for any single person to maintain relationships in more than three communities at a time, [but] I'd say that a very social, highly engaged person can manage up to nine with success." Klipsch KMC 3 Portable Speaker Will Knock Your Socks Off Posted: 26 May 2013 11:24 AM PDT When Klipsch decided to insert a new wireless music system at the top of its line of Bluetooth speakers, it wasn't messing around with the Klipsch KMC 3 Wireless Music System The 17-inch-wide Bluetooth speaker can hardly be described as pocket-sized, but its 7.8-pound weight and handy carrying handle invite you to take it along on your next picnic or beach bash. Fill it up with eight D-sized batteries, and Klipsch says you can play it wirelessly for 8 hours at its maximum volume. When Klipsch mentions maximum volume, watch out. The company claims 105 dB of maximum acoustic output, loud enough to damage your hearing if you listen to it long enough. Its amplifier cranks out an impressive 65 Watts (130W peak) of bi-amped goodness. A couple of 2-inch aluminum diaphragm mid/high-frequency drivers handle 15 Watts each, accompanied by a 5.25" long-throw subwoofer that's driven by a hefty 35 Watts. Read more...
