Google Glass Photographer Makes Picture-Taking Awkward Posted: 25 May 2013 08:52 PM PDT With its efficient picture-taking capabilities, Google Glass could revolutionize photography — but not necessarily for the better, as one video shows The nearly two-minute video follows a Google Glass photographer taking pictures that would be routine when using DSLR or point-and-shoot cameras. When using the high-tech specs, however, things get awkward and a little creepy. Check it out, above. Don't be a Glasshole, folks Screenshot image courtesy of YouTube, gogrovo Read more... Who Are the 3 Big Winners in the Smartphone Market? Posted: 25 May 2013 07:51 PM PDT Benedict Evans, a consultant at UK-based research firm Enders Analysis, has a great post describing the market for smartphones (and phones more broadly) in three charts and about 600 words. Admirable economy! Let me try to compress the argument even further. If one looks at profits, only two companies make a substantial amount of money: Apple and Samsung. (Check out the chart, below.) If one looks at market share in smartphones, Google's Android platform is increasingly dominant. The Android operating system is grabbing an ever-larger share of an ever-larger market. "To put this another way, looking at 'smartphone share' or 'profit share' or 'platform share' all tell you something about the industry, but all three metrics mislead you if you try to treat them as a way to see who's 'winning', because 'winning' means different things for Apple, Samsung or Google," Evans concludes. And in one way or another, all three are making out all right. Read more... More about Apple, Samsung, Smartphone, Tech, and Gadgets |
Yahoo's Design Chief Leaves Company Posted: 25 May 2013 06:58 PM PDT It's been a big week for Yahoo. The company purchased Tumblr for $1.1 billion, rolled out a major update to Flickr and reportedly put in a bid for Hulu. On top of all that, it also lost its senior vice-president of user-experience design. Tim Parsey, who joined the company in 2011, has left, as first reported by AllThingsD. Before Yahoo, Parsey held positions at Motorola, Mattel and on Microsoft's Xbox team. Parsey told The New York Times that "the type of role I feel I'm better at is when I'm able to lead a transition of design at a company, and that job is done at Yahoo." "I'm very proud of that," he added. Read more... More about Yahoo, Marissa Mayer, Business, and Dev Design |
The Truth About Company-Owned Gadgets Posted: 25 May 2013 06:23 PM PDT A 2011 study found that one in six mobile devices has fecal matter on it as a result of bringing them into the bathroom, but does that include company-owned gadgets, too?
In this comic, Krishna Sadasivam of PC Weenies shows us that we should be wary of the communal gadgets at work. "Employees Must Wash Hands" has become "Employees Must Wipe Down Touch Screens." Wikileaks Documentary Attacks Assange, Excuses Manning Posted: 25 May 2013 05:27 PM PDT Julian Assange is a villain, Bradley Manning is a hero: That is the message of We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks, a new documentary now showing in theaters nationwide. We Steal Secrets opens with the story of "WANK," a prank-worm that hit NASA in 1989. It did no damage and was unrelated to Wikileaks — though the film infers it was tied to a group of Australian hackers of which Assange was a part. The WANK sequence serves the role of Star Trek's constantly dying, red shirt-clad ensigns: establishing something is dangerous (in this case, computer hackers). The film then moves into telling the story of Wikileaks with a focus on Assange, its founder and editor. At first, Assange is cast as a brilliant but rebellious programmer, while Wikileaks is shown as the collaborative effort of like-minded souls — though with Assange firmly at the helm Read more... Is This Kickstarter Project the Future of Blogging? Posted: 25 May 2013 04:51 PM PDT Ghost, an open-source blogging platform that hopes to shake up the personal publishing space, is nearing the end of its Kickstarter journey. Almost a month ago, Ghost launched with what seemed like an audacious goal: Raise £25,000 to help create a new web platform dedicated to publishing. To date, the project has raised £150,000 (that's $226,000 in U.S. dollars), and it has a shot at making its £250,000 stretch goal. So what is it about Ghost that has resonated with users, developers and writers? I spent some time talking with John O'Nolan, the founder and project leader of Ghost, about Kickstarter, open-source software and the future of publishing. Read more... The Epic Journey Through Dieting Posted: 25 May 2013 03:12 PM PDT To say that dieting is tough is quite the understatement. In fact, sometimes we go to great measures to overcome the temptation of deliciously unhealthy foods.
In this comic, Josh Mecouch of Formal Sweatpants recasts Homer's epic poem The Odyssey in a very relatable way. Can you resist the siren song of saturated fats?

Posted: 25 May 2013 02:26 PM PDT As we enjoy Memorial Weekend, we look back to another great week in the world of technology. And if you're wondering what happened in the last seven days, worry not — Top 10 Tech brings you a list of the most important techno-stories of the week. Undoubtedly, the biggest news of all was the much-anticipated unveiling and launch of the Microsoft Xbox One. It has the potential to be much more than just a gaming console. SEE ALSO: Previous editions of Top 10 Tech This Week Other than the big Xbox One launch, perhaps the biggest "other" announcement was the confirmation that Yahoo acquired Tumblr, in an attempt to revive the dormant tech giant. How Hackers Stole $45 Million in Two Days Posted: 25 May 2013 02:01 PM PDT It was a bank heist for the digital era: No masks, no weapons, no standoffs with police — just a few keyboards and an elaborate hacking plan. In two sprightly operations, on December 12, 2012, and February 19, 2013, an international team of hackers and thieves stole a collective $45 million from more than 5,000 ATMs across the world. Eight suspects were charged in connection with the crimes on May 9 — still, the complex operation is one that should be understood, if only to better prevent future attacks. This infographic, from fraud detection and prevention firm 41st Parameter, highlights the team's process — from raising the limits on prepaid debit accounts in banks in Oman to siphoning cash from machines in 27 countries — in colorful detail. How the Facebook Developer Platform Has Changed How We Use the Web Posted: 25 May 2013 01:46 PM PDT To say the Facebook Developer Platform changed the web as we know it would be a dramatic understatement. Originally launching in 2007 as a tool for developers to build apps for the social network, six years later it has evolved into a whole lot more. Facebook has grown outside of the confines of Facebook.com and is not only a presence on many of the websites we visit — either through a Facebook log-in, or Share or Like capability. It's also a growing mainstay in the mobile world, allowing us stay connected and play games with our friends while we're on the go. Friday, the Facebook Developer Platform turned six years old. We took the milestone as an opportunity to sit down with the Director of Platform Product at Facebook, Doug Purdy, to talk about the evolution of the Facebook platform over the past six years, what it all means, and where it’s going in the future. Google Buzz Is About to Finally Buzz Off Posted: 25 May 2013 01:11 PM PDT More than 18 months after announcing that it was shutting down Google Buzz, Google is taking the final steps in snuffing out the platform. According to an email sent to Buzz users, as of July 17, 2013, Google will remove the posts from its public servers and archive them to users Google Drive acounts. Google Buzz — for those of you who don't remember — was Google's first attempt at a broader social strategy. In many ways, the network can be viewed as a precursor to Google+ It took elements from Twitter and Facebook, but was focused on existing within a special tab in Gmail. The idea was that users could share quick updates with their followers or frequent contacts from within the inbox. The service could also syndicate content from other services — a la FriendFeed — and conversations could take place around that content Read more... 12 Cicadas Totally Trapped in 1996 Posted: 25 May 2013 12:42 PM PDT The East Coast cicadas, currently emerging by the billions, have spent the last 17 years underground, making today's world a bit of a shock for them In 1996, Alanis Morissette was just a "Jagged Little Pill" and only 20 million Americans dialed up to the Internet. Clearly, Swarmageddon 2013 is making the bug population feel nostalgic for the '90s
Humans, please try to make the cicadas feel welcome by explaining iPhones and The Real Housewives of New Jersey 1. So much for AOL screen names. Sorry, "Cicaduh6969."2. Never forget JTTMore about List, Humor, 90s, Watercooler, and Pics |

Are Today's App Companies Amusing Us to Death or Building the Future? Posted: 25 May 2013 11:08 AM PDT The national conversation of late has revolved around a trio of Washington scandals, a weather disaster, and the seesaw views in financial markets about whether crisis looms. Yet for all their prominence, none are as tied to trends that will shape our collective future as the myriad events that took place this week in New York City under the banner of "Internet Week." Now in its sixth year, Internet Week is a loosely coordinated series of gatherings ranging from daylong symposiums to open houses of tech companies large and small to the Webby Awards, which is the online version of the Oscars. Topics cover the gamut from health care in the digital age to marketing your startup to crowdfunding. The attendees are young and at times terminally hip. The whole thing is, quite frankly, fun. Gmail Overhaul Might Be On the Way Posted: 25 May 2013 10:14 AM PDT Despite rolling out a major overhaul a little over a year ago, Google could be preparing to redesign the Gmail experience on iOS, Android and the desktop. Reports of a new look for the Android client came from the eagle-eyes at Android Police — who noticed the new addition of a navigation drawer UI element in a Google I/O session on Android design patterns. That change mimics the design of Gmail for iOS and of Sparrow — the Gmail-centric mail client that Google acquired last year. While an update or overhaul of Gmail for Android makes sense — and might even be expected — The Next Web is reporting that a larger visual overhaul is also headed for the desktop and iOS. Hacker Turns Westboro Baptist Church Hate Page Into Donation Site Posted: 25 May 2013 09:55 AM PDT The Westboro Baptist Church can add another group to its "hate" list: hackers. The Christian fundamentalist group, notorious for its "God Hates Fags" protests, launched a website on Monday called GodHatesOklahoma.com, just hours after a mile-wide tornado hit the town of Moore, Okla., and killed 24 people. The site didn't last long. Whatever content was originally published — presumably a rant about how America's "sins" are being chastised, per the group's usual protests — was hacked and replaced by a photo of Jesus Christ giving the middle finger, along with the message, "Westboro Faptist Church — Even Jesus Hates You." (Faptist being a reference to the word "fap," Internet slang for "masturbate"). Read more... More about Donations, Hackers, Westboro Baptist Church, Us World, and Social Good |
GIF vs. JIF: Does It Even Matter? Posted: 25 May 2013 08:56 AM PDT At the Webby Awards this week, Steve Wilhite, father of the Graphics Interchange Format, used his five-word acceptance speech to end a popular debate: It's pronounced "JIF," not "GIF." Unsurprisingly, this outraged many Internet users.
In this comic, our friends Nitrozac and Snaggy at The Joy of Tech illustrate a different position — that neither is wrong, exactly. Do you agree?

25 Ways to Celebrate Geek Pride Day Posted: 25 May 2013 08:31 AM PDT You're surrounded by geeks every day. Your commute is filled with people playing Dots. Your best friend spends her Saturday nights creating Everquest fan art. And you constantly imagine scenarios in terms of endless loops. But May 25 is officially the time to let your nerdy flag fly — it's Geek Pride Day.
Chosen for the anniversary of the first Star Wars film release in 1977, Geek Pride Day originated in Spain in 2006, where it was called "Día del Orgullo Friki." Yep, should you tire of the term "geek," you may refer to yourself as a "frik" (pronounced like "freak"). We'll take it. Read more... More about Features, Holiday, Geek, Watercooler, and Pics |
Hiring Interns: Do's and Don'ts Posted: 25 May 2013 07:36 AM PDT Hiring interns for your company means more than just finding a pair of hands to get you coffee or feet to run your clothes to the dry cleaner. Interns can be the future of your company, so it makes sense to hire the smartest and most capable workers Last year, nearly 60% of interns were converted into full-time hires by companies. After all, interns learned the ropes through their experience Think of it this way: You’re not just hiring a talented employee. By using your internship program as a talent pipeline, you’re also ensuring you hire field-tested workers. You don’t have to worry if the interns can do the job or will fit into the company culture; they’ve already proven their abilities Read more...
